Giant Ground Sloths

Dinocrocuta, also known as the “terrible hyena,”

Megafauna is a term that refers to large or “giant” animals. These large animals are almost entirely extinct. There are a number of theories why these animals died out,.
Prehistoric animals are animals that lived more than 5,000 years ago ... Although you would automatically think of prehistoric animals as being “dinosaurs” that is not strictly true as dinosaurs are actually a group of reptiles that were usually large and had hind legs that extended directly underneath their bodies.

There are over 80 genera of ground sloth. Some of these “Giant Sloths” grew to over 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall and weighed over 5 tons (4,500 kg)! These were not the small, sedentary, tree-living sloths of today!

Dinocrocuta, also known as the “terrible hyena,” ... stood as a formidable predator of its time. Its massive head housed an array of sharp, bone-crushing teeth, reminiscent of its hyena relatives. The forelimbs were strong and muscular, allowing for powerful attacks on prey, while the hindlimbs were built for speed and agility...Its name, a combination of “dino” and “crocuta,” refers to its dinosaur-like appearance.
One of the most striking features of Dinocrocuta was its size. With an estimated weight of up to 1,000 kilograms and a height of nearly two meters.
